Brief summary for Burgundy canal
The canal provides North to South access through France. Via the Seine and Rhone. Very picturesque and agreeable to cruise. Upto recently the canal was poorly financed and has suffered. With new state grants, comprehensive renovation work has began.
There is a very important wine production in this region, agriculture. Varied geography, with the Morvan park. Rich in history, Cistercian influence, and the Dukes of Burgundy assured a long independence from France.
The trading routes and crossroads provide econmic importance for the region, and hence the construction of the canal. With access to Marseille, and the Rhine via the river Saone, and the Yonne giving access to the Seine.
The canal crosses the Burgundy watershed with the summit at Pouilly en Auxois, more than 300 metres above sealevel. The 3 kilometer tunnel is very intreresting to cruise through.
